Areas, at work

Areas keeps boundaries in the browser with every revision, measures them on the ellipsoid, and hands them to other tools. Three demonstrations, live on whichever area you choose below: your own, or one of the examples.

A place report from a few range requests

Statistics for the area from public cloud-optimized GeoTIFFs, read straight from object storage. The browser fetches the file header, then only the tiles under the area: kilobytes out of hundreds of megabytes.

Size, measured, not as the map draws it

Every area is measured on the WGS84 ellipsoid. Drag it toward a pole and Web Mercator inflates it; the measured area stays put. Below, every area at the same ground scale.

Into any app, then into SQL

pickAreas() lets any https site ask for areas. The person picks in a popup, the site gets one GeoArrow snapshot over a private channel, and DuckDB-wasm loads it as a table. No server, no upload, no account.

Everything on this page runs in your browser. The rasters come from Source Cooperative by HTTP range request; DuckDB-wasm loads from jsDelivr. Your areas never leave this tab unless you hand them to a site yourself.
